Ühest pisut isemoodi koolist

Selle aasta sügisest tegutseb New Yorgi Eesti Kooli väikese haruna Long Islandi Eesti Kool.

Sõna “kool” manab silme ette koolimaja koos klassitäite õpilastega. Meie osake New Yorgi koolist on aga tilluke, sugugi mitte päris kooli moodi. Koolimajaks on vahel Long Islandi Eesti Kodu või selle hoov, vahel aga hoopis kellegi kodu või mõni muu põnev paik, kus parasjagu kõige mugavam tundub. Kooli peame aga siis, kui õpilasi vähemalt kaks. Ja kes on õpetajad? Eks ikka emad ise.

Enamusel koolidel on seljataga pikad aastad, aastakümned või isegi aastasajad. Jah, ja meilgi tuleb kokku tervelt neli – hmm…kokkusaamiskorda.

Mis me selle ajaga teinud või korda saatnud oleme? Peamine, oleme saanud ju suhelda ja lastel on olnud võimalus rääkida eesti keeles ka teistega, kui ainult oma pere liikmed. Lisaks jutuajamisele on lastel olnud lugemis- ja laulmistunnid. Ükski kord ei ole seni möödunud ilma õdusa teejoomise ja meisterdamiseta.

Ühe õige kooli juurde käib alati koolikord ja õppekava. Jälle oleme natuke teistsugused – paindlikumad, kuna meid on nii vähe. Koolipäevad ja –kellaajad lepime kokku jooksvalt. Õpitegevuses katsume üldjoontes järgida seda, mis parasjagu ka linna kooli laste õppekavas on. Üht-teist teeme aga omamoodi, nii kuidas parasjagu võimalust ja soovi. Ka ei ole meil kindlat õpilaste nimekirja. Kes soovib, võib alati kampa lüüa.

Algusest alustamise jätame seekord lõppu. Kooskäimiste “pall” hakkas tegelikult veerema tänu NY Eesti Kooli juhatajale Merikesele. On ju olemas selline kena paik nagu Long Islandi Eesti Kodu (NY) ja samas leidub ka lapsi, kelle koolitee saarelt linna tähendab päris pikka ja tõsist ettevõtmist. Miks siis mitte asju omavahel klapitada. Nii me siin siis nüüd õnnelikult kokku saame, arendame eesti keele oskust, tutvustame lastele eesti kultuuri ja püüame seda kõike teha aina paremini.
