30 Years Since Baltic Chain For Freedom
It has been 30 years since the Baltic Way (also Chain) peaceful political demonstration on August 23, 1989. Approximately 2 million people joined hands to form a human chain spanning 419.7 miles across the three Soviet-occupied Baltic states. The demonstration originated in “Black Ribbon Day” protests held in Western cities in the 1980s and marked the 50th anniversary of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. Events commemorating the event will take place around the globe.

Former PMs Met on Toompea
Prime Minister Jüri Ratas hosted previous prime ministers of Estonia at Stenbock House on August 19. Five former PMs took part, three belonging to the Reform Party did not attend. The purpose of the reception was for the current and past heads of government to exchange thoughts and ideas regarding the future of the state. It marked the third time PMs have met at Stenbock House ahead of Aug 20, the Day of Restoration of Independence.

 

Vanemuise Operettas Coming to Lakewood
As part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of Tartu’s Vanemuine, the theatre is preparing concert-performances with which they will visit the Lakewood Estonian House on September 6 and 7. The Friday performance is meant for all ages and will feature songs from Estonian operattas and musicals, performing and make-up tips and a chance to participate. Saturday’s event is geared towards adults and includes dinner.

 

Exhibition of 1944 Great Refugee Flight Opens at Seaplane Harbour
On August 22 the Estonian Maritime Museum opened the audiovisual exhibition “1944 – The Great Refugee Flight” at the Seaplane Harbour’s small exhibition hall. The exhibition is dedicated to the 75th anniversary of tens of thousands of Estonian’s escape across the sea to freedom in the West and will be open until June 30, 2020.

 

Film About Rein Taagepera on ETV
The 2018 Estonian film about the life and life’s work of political scientist and one-time Estonian presidential candidate Rein Taagepera, who divides his time between California and Estonia, was shown on ETV on August 19 and is available for viewing on the TV page of the err.ee website for the next 6 months.
