Estonian sisters Leila, Liina and Lily Luik could become what is believed to be the first set of triplets to compete in an Olympics, according to Games historians.
All three Luiks have clocked Olympic qualifying times in the marathon, the last sister doing so at the Hamburg Marathon in Germany on Sunday.
It’s not assured that all Luiks will race in Rio, as Estonians have until June 1 to clock qualifying times, according to Estonia’s track and field federation.
As of now, the Luiks are the only Estonians to meet the Olympic women’s marathon qualifying time of 2:45:00.
A nation may enter no more than three athletes in an Olympic marathon.
The Luiks were born Oct. 14, 1985.
None of the Luiks have run a marathon faster than 2:37, so they aren’t Olympic medal contenders quite yet.
