USA Rahukorpus 50 – 10 aastat Eestis

"Ärge küsige, mida teie maa on teile andnud, pigem küsige, mida teie olete oma maale andnud" – need on sõnad, millega USA president John Kennedy kutsus inimesi üles mitte niivõrd abi ootama, vaid hoopis abi osutama. Oli aasta 1961 ja presidendi üleskutse tulemusena sündis USA Rahukorpus, mille 165 000 vabatahtlikku on 50 aasta jooksul töötanud loendamatutes valdkondades 135 maal. Pärast külma sõja lõppu olid ka Balti riigid koht, kus USA Rahukorpus nägi söötis tööpõldu – pea olematut kodanikuühiskonda, nõukogude okupatsiooni tekitatud vaevaliselt toimivat igapäevaolmet, vaesust ja käegalöömist. Ei saanud Eesti läbi Ameerika vabatahtlike abita.

 Rahukorpus saabus Eestisse 1992. aasta juunis-juulis, pärast valitsustevahelise lepingu sõlmimist veebruaris. Aga kõigepealt tuli siinse "kliimaga" harjuda. Õpiti ja harjutati kohanema Tartus. Ameerika vabatahtlikud abimehed jäid Eestisse kümneks aastaks. Neid oli kokku 177 inimest, kelle jaoks jagus tööd ja tegemist 64 Eesti linnas ja külas. Mida need inimesed siin tegid? Ei ole vist kahtlust, et kõige oodatumad olid nad väikestes kohtades, kus vaba ja värsket mõtet oli kõige rohkem vaja. Esimese tööna tuleb nimetada inglise keele õpetamist, aga tegelikult õppis enamik vabatahtlikest rääkima just eesti keeles. Kes meist ei mäletaks üle-Eesti levinud Douglas Wellsi laulu "Kas sa oskad inglise keelt?" Vabatahtlik Wells õppis ära eesti keele ja temast sai Hiiumaa uuema rahvapärimuse tegelaskuju.

USA Rahukorpuse 50. sünnipäevaks korraldas Tallinnas oma residentsis vastuvõtu USA suursaadik Michael C. Polt ja kohal oli ka kümme neist, kes omal ajal eestlasi vabatahtlikult nõustamas olid. Tuntuimatest näiteks ERR ingliskeelse uudistetoimetuse juht ja kolumnist Scott Diel ja ärimees Robert Oetjen. Skype'i kaudu oli peol kohal ka Douglas Wells, kes Tallinna peokülalistele oma tuntud laulu esitas. Peoline oli ka president Toomas Hendrik Ilves.       
Teise, aga palju olulisema valdkonnana kui inglise keele õpetamine, tuleb nimetada erinevaid koolitusi, mida neil aastail – üleminekuaja Eestis – oli igal sammul vaja. Et ärgitada inimesi mõtlema ja tegutsema ettevõtjana.
Ameerika vabatahtlikele endale oli toonane Eesti ikka müstiline paik, kuid siinsed inimesed said omaseks ja armsakski. Kuigi mitte kõik ameeriklased ei saanud üle-Eesti nii kuulsaks nagu Hiiumaal töötanud Douglas Wells, olid oma küla vabatahtlikud ikka igal pool omainimesed. Nii omad, et tihti ununes ära, et tuldud oli kaugelt ja ajutiselt. Aga loodi ka eesti-ameerika peresid.
Miks ikkagi inimesed teevad vabal tahtel tihti ebameeldivaidki töid kodust kaugel, tagasihoidlikes elutingimustes on küsimus, millele võib vastust otsida-leida USA rahukorpuslase Douglas Wellsi raamatus, kus temagi otsib USA Rahukorpuse ülimat hetke.
