Kadunud (ja jälle leitud) kodumaa

Oktoobris 2012 juhtus siinkirjutaja nägema internetis rõõmustavat teadet, et Ilmar Raagi mängufilmis “Eestlanna Pariisis” (Une Estonienne à Paris) esinev Laine Mägi pälvis Prantsusmaal, Saint Jean de Luz’i rahvusvahelisel filmifestivalil parima naispeaosalise auhinna. Kiiduväärt saavutus! Ent sa-mas lõi uuesti lõkkele ammune tunnetus, et midagi oli (nagu hiljem selgus) liimist lahti sõjapõgenikku kehastava välismaalase osaga 1949. aastal Cannes’is Kuldse palmioksa võitnud  Graham Greene’i ja Carol Reedi film noir‘is “Kolmas mees” (The Third Man), peaosades Joseph Cotton, Trevor Howard, Alida Valli ja Orson Welles. 

Filmi tegevus toimub vahetult pärast Teise maailmasõja lõppu Viinis, mida valitsevad inglased, ameeriklased, prantslased ja venelased. Linn on enam-vähem puruks pommitatud. Näeme ekspressionistlikult viltuseid varemeid ja kortereid ning kuuleme, et mustal turul kaubeldakse vanenud arstimitega, mis on tapnud hulga lapsi. Anton Karase omapärane tsitrimuusika loob lummava helitausta, mille kajad kostavad isegi kolossaalses maa-aluses roiskvee torustikus, kus peetakse klaperjahti arstimitega hangeldanud sarmikale närukaelale. Ühesõnaga igati põnev ja haarav film. Ent miski on siiski mäda, eriti kui heidame pilgu filmi stsenaariumile.  

Seda lugedes esineb Anna selgesõnaliselt eestlannana lehekülgedel 53, 70 ja 89 (Graham Greene & Carol Reed. The Third Man. New York, 1968).  Sama raamatu Andrew Sinclairi eessõnas (lk. 6) on aga Annast saanud tšehhitar.  

Seitsmendal leheküljel tutvustatakse Annat jälle kui eestlannat, ent sõnale “Estonian” järgneb seal sulgudes Czechoslovakian – ehk jälle tšehhitar. Aasta hiljem ilmunud Greene’i samanimelises romaanis (The Third Man, 1950)  esineb Anna hoopis ungarlannana, mis toob ta vähemalt tagasi soomeugrilaste kilda!                

Kui nüüd küsida, miks vajame sellist pimesikumängu, on olemas vähemalt kaks vastust. Esiteks, kuna  filmi peamiseks stsenaristiks oli Eestiga juba varem tutvunud inglise kirjanik Graham Greene, võib oletada, et ta keeldus tegemast kompromissi stuudio tuusadega, kes ühel või teisel põhjusel põiklesid kõrvale eestlannast Annast. Teiseks, kuna filmi lõpul on ilmne, et Anna antakse varem või hiljem venelaste kätte, oli vähemalt tookordne estofiil Greene sokutanud killukese meie Teise maailmasõja traagikast “Kolmanda mehe” trükitud stsenaariumi.
