Veel Marie Underist

“Vaba Eesti Sõna”  21. jaanuari 2010 numbris oli pikem ülevaade kirjandusteadlase Sirje Kiini doktoriväitekirjast Marie Underi elu ja loomingu kohta. Oli rõõm lugeda – ja tänu dr. Sirje Kiinile!
Jah, see on tõsi. Aga kõik pole kadunud.

Mu riiulil on raamat: “Anthology of Modern Estonian Poetry”, autoriks Londoni ülikooli kirjandusprofessor W. K. Matthews, Greenwood Press, Westport, CT, 1953.   Teos sisaldab 159 luuletust 27 autorilt, Matthews’i poolt meisterlikult inglise keelde tõlgitud. Nende hulgas on 20 luuletust Marie Underilt.   Toon nendest siinkohal ära kaks, kõrvutades eesti- ja ingliskeelsed versioonid.   Lugeja võib teha ise oma järeldused*.

Suvine mälestus                                 Summer Memory

Klaasrõdul vara ootasin ma sind,            The door ajar, I stood at point of day
kui üle läve päikse kuldne king               Tiptoe for you and with awakened eyes,
arg-aralt astus.  Nagu kirju lint               The sun’s gold slipper trod the gravelled way,
end keris üle aia lõhnaving.                    The grasses spilled their dews in glad surprise   –
Sa tulid läbi valge õilmemöllu,                 And then you came out of a mist of flowers
mis sädeles kui liblikate ring.                  That clung and swayed like knots of butterflies!

Kui hiljem läksime me üle põllu,               When afterwards we two in softened hours
kus laisalt õõtsus rukki ruuge puri  –         Walked through the fields of rye all red for reaping,
siis näis kui astuksin ma praegu ellu:        I felt as if my heart obeyed new powers:
kõik uuenes, kõik vana minus suri.           The old in me seemed either dead or sleeping,
Pilk pöörat magunate lõõsa ahju,             And as I glimpsed the poppies’ fluttering fire,
mu süda hõõgus sinule kui uri,                An eager pleasure set my pulses leaping,
ma kandsin eneses suurt tulikahju.          And you, these sang, could give me my desire.

Mälestus ja tõotus

Nüüd mälestades seiskem palja päi:
Mis võet meilt, meenutagem, ja mis meile jäi.

Kõik kaotused ja surma vahesein  –
See hoiab püsti meid:  meid liidab püha lein.

Me mure-kodu  –  seiskem selle ees
Kui elav müür, nii nooruk, rauk, kui mees.

Arm selle mulla vastu rinnast rinda käib,
Kus puhkab meie hõim, kus kasvab meie leib.

Meilt palju võetud  –  siiski meile jäi
Me uhkus, au ning viha:  seiskem püsti päi!

Remembrance and Pledge

Now let us stand with bowed and naked head,
Remembering what is left and what is dead.

All we have lost and death’s dividing wall  –
These give us strength that nothing can appal.

Our homeland’s wrongs shall make our patience bold:
Let us defend her wall-like, young and old.

Love of the earth passes from heart to heart,
Earth of our dead, in which we each have part.

Much else has perished, yet these are not dead  –
Our pride and rage:  let’s stand with lifted head.

*   Eestikeelsed tsitaadid on raamatutest  “Marie Under, kogutud luuletused”, kirjastus Vaba Eesti, 1958,  ja  M. Under:  “Sõnasild”, kirjastus ORTO, 1945.
