Lembit Beecher’s new composition for string quartet – Cassette Dreams of the Singing Revolution – will be premiered by the Houston-based Apollo Chamber Players as part of their program ENLIGHTEN on November 15.
The work is Lembit’s reflection on the nonviolent uprising in the Baltic Countries during the ’80s and ’90s – composed through the lens of a mixtape he remembers from his childhood in that period, combining ’80s rock with Estonian folk music. The piece works on more than one level, channeling the retro feel of the era while speaking to world events from a unique personal angle.
Cassette Dreams of the Singing Revolution will premiere as part of Apollo Chamber Players’ concert series American Story, which focuses on America’s founding principles and continuing legacy as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary. Lembit’s work focusing on the Baltic countries reflects on how these same principles of national freedom and independence echo through to modern times.
