Join us for a talk by art historian Heie Treier, PhD, about Louis Kahn and Estonia at The Center for Architecture and Design Philadelphia. The lecture is based on the current photography exhibition From Island To Island: The Creative Journey of Louis Kahn by Arne Maasik.

The presentation deals with one possible interpretation of ‘the beginning’, a concept that often resounded in Louis Kahn’s vocabulary. What were the architect’s own beginnings like? The story starts on an island, which is located in the Baltic Sea – in the Baltic states. When Louis Kahn was born, the island was called Ösel, but later, as the result of political changes, its name became Saaremaa.
The presentation discusses the local identity and the rich medieval building heritage, as seen through a Kahn filter. The basis for the presentation is the long-term, and slowly progressing, comparative research conducted by the Tallinn-based Kahn research group, which has reached a mature phase. The photos are by Arne Maasik, whose exhibition entitled From Island to Island is currently on display at the Center for Architecture and Design.
Heie Marie Treier, PhD, b 1963, is an art historian and art critic lecturing at the Baltic School of Film, Media, Arts and Communication of Tallinn University. Her dissertation was on the topic of Early Modernist painting and Karl Pärsimägi (1901-1942), who died in Auschwitz.
As the editorin-chief of kunst.ee magazine in 2000-2007, she participated in the Documenta magazine project in Kassel, Germany in 2007.
This project is the outcome of a long-term research process and dialogue with American and Estonian intellectuals.
