Academic Conference Celebrates 100 Years of US-Estonia Relations
A conference held on June 17 in Tallinn featuring leading diplomats, academics and former president Toomas Hendrik Ilves marked the centennial of Estonia-United States relations. “After introductions and the presentation of a commemorative postage stamp issued by Omniva/Eesti Post to mark the event, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, who grew up in New Jersey and was President of Estonia 2006-2016, gave the keynote speech at the conference,” ERR reported. The event was co-organized by the U.S Embassy in Tallinn and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and can be re-watched on the Estonian MFA YouTube channel The U.S. recognized the independent Republic of Estonia de jure on July 28 1922, during the presidency of Warren Harding. Helena Tulve’s Opera “Wölfe” to Premiere in Germany
The documentary nature opera “Wölfe” (“Wolves”) by composer Helena Tulve will premiere on June 24 at the Mecklenburg State Theatre in Schwerin. The director and librettist of the opera is Nina Gühlstorff who also compiled the libretto on the basis of numerous interviews with wolf experts, farmers, forestry and hunting experts and politicians. Among the interviewees was Helen Arusoo, a valued wolf specialist from Estonia. According to Tulve, the more general content of the opera is the coexistence of man and nature and the journey of inner change of the human. (Pg 4)
Nearly € 5 million in Foreign Currency From International Sports Events
The Estonian Ministry of Culture has allocated more than 2.1 million euros to support the organization of international sports events in 2022. The events that have already taken place this year have brought nearly five million euros of foreign currency and almost 750,000 euros of VAT to Estonia. (Pg 6)
