Louis Kahn Memorial Plaque Unveiled in Kuressaare
On May 5, a memorial plaque honoring Estonian-born American architect Louis Kahn was unveiled in Kuressaare Castle Park on Saaremaa island. Leading American manufacturer of historic signs, Sewah Studios, Inc. sand cast the aluminum panel. The Kahn Memorial looks identical to its twin, erected in front of the offices of Louis Kahn Architects in Philadelphia. The commemoration of Louis Kahn also marked the 100th anniversary of Estonian-American diplomatic relations. (Pg 1)

Finland Has Decided to Join NATO
In a joint statement issued on Thursday, May 12, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Sanna Marin announced that Finland must apply for NATO membership without delay. Estonia fully supports the decision. Finland’s leaders said that parliament and the public have discussed the issue this spring and confirmed their intention to join the Alliance, ERR reported. “NATO membership would strengthen Finland’s security. As a member of NATO, Finland would strengthen the entire defense alliance,” they stated. Additional steps will be taken in the next few days. A formal application has not yet been submitted. (Pg 2)

Trouble Finding Seasonal Workers
Despite the fact that more than 37,000 Ukrainian refugees have arrived in Estonia, it’s not possible to recruit essential seasonal workers in sufficient quantities, according to the Chamber of Agriculture and Commerce. A lack of interest in working and living in rural areas and lack of previous experience in agriculture were cited as the main obstacles in the employment of war refugees. Meanwhile, local strawberry growers are saddened by the fact that Ukrainian pickers they have hired for several summers are now in a dangerous warzone. (Pg 5)
