The 2018 AABS (Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies) Conference is coming to Stanford University June 1-3. It celebrates two milestones – the 50th anniversary of the founding of the AABS and the 100th anniversary of independence for the Baltic republics.

Early conference registration for the general public was extended through May 1. Between May 1 and before May 15, fees increased to $30 for keynotes and $75 for evening events. The final registration deadline is May 15. The academic program of the conference is free of charge.

To accompany the conference, Stanford Libraries presents the exhibit "The Baltic Way: History and Culture in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania 1918-2018," which runs from May 7 to August 18  at the Green Library on the Stanford campus. Using photographs, posters, correspondence, and other documents paired with narrative text, the exhibit attempts to explain the complicated history of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in the twentieth century, and considers their prospects and challenges in the twenty-first. The exhibit's opening reception is on May 10, RSVPs required and space limited.

A second exhibit, "Masters of Our Own Homes: Estonia at 100" will run from May 31 to June 6 at the Stanford Shopping Center's Center Pavilion. Produced by the Estonian Museum of Occupations, the exhibit commemorates a century since the founding of the Republic of Estonia and introduces its history, culture, innovation, and people to the wider world. The opening of the exhibit on June 2 includes the roundtable "No Boundaries: An Oral History Project about Estonia’s Transformation in the Digital Age," with chairs Anders Hjemdahl and Camilla Andersson-Hjemdahl and members include Sten Tamkivi, Rainer Sternfeld, Andrus Viirg, Ott Kaukver, and Toomas Hendrik Ilves, with opening remarks from filmmaker James Tusty. The June 2 opening is free and open to the public.
