A banner seen in front of a Neste gas station in Tallinn this week features a reindeer and the smaller print reads: Soome talvediisel, Finnish winter diesel. Parim kuni -32° C juures. The best up to -32° C. And on the bottom left: Sõidame soodsalt, Let's drive profitably, i.e. for less. (Soodne = advantageous, favorable, profitable. Soodne hind is a good price. ) Diesel vehicle drivers are living on the edge here, since -32° is precisely the forecast low for most nights in Eesti for the first week of February.  Next door at the Estonian-owned Alexela gas station (Neste Oil is a Finnish company), a similar banner had been hung above the snowbanks. Instead of a põhja/põder (reindeer), its product promoter is a jää/karu (polar bear).

January 18, 2012 --- The Estonian American National Council, Inc, (EANC) has named Linda Rink as its new Executive Director.  L. Rink will assist the Board of Directors with developing and implementing programs and strategies, and will be responsible for EANC’s day-to-day operations, including bookkeeping, marketing, and communications. Before joining EANC, Rink was President of Rink Consulting, a marketing services agency in Philadelphia.  Her industry background includes marketing positions at Hunt Corporation, Amtrak, Seagram and Quaker Oats.  She holds a B.A. degree from Harvard University and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.

ERR News - Under the guise of intellectual property rights enforcement, Europeans could become victims of the US political system's dependence on corporate money. The Wikipedia-led blackout on January 18 in protest against SOPA and PIPA appears to have been a big success. The blackout raised awareness among the general public about the nefarious effects of the legislation and forced many in Congress to reconsider. It would be a mistake, however, to think that the internet is only under threat in the United States. The same forces that are at work trying to push the anti-piracy web censorship bills through the US Congress are at work around the world. In Estonia they are working through the American Chamber of Commerce in Estonia (AmCham) and the US Embassy, which are actively lobbying the Estonian government for stronger anti-piracy laws.

The Organizing Committee of the 34th Gatineau Loppet unveiled details of the next edition of the biggest cross-country ski event in Canada. The 34th Annual Gatineau Loppet will take place on Feb. 17-19, 2012. Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip, a passionate skier who has taken part in several Worldloppet events, will be in the Outaouais in February for the Gatineau Loppet 51 km classic. The Embassy of Estonia will mark the event with a souvenir for every child who participates in the Mini Sport Éxchange Outaouais.

Dear benevolent reader, subscriber or friend of  Free Estonian Word!   In February 2012 VABA EESTI SÕNA (Free Estonian Word) will publish a commemorative  issue to honor the 94th ESTONIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY.  As the continuation of Estonia and Estonian language relies on its citizen, the future of our newspaper depends on our readers and subscribers. VES helps to connect the activities of different Estonian communities in the US and beyond and without a compiled history of the Estonians in US, it is the only comprehensive reference of our historical activities in printed format.

You have already received, or will shortly receive, the Estonian American National Council’s fundraising letter, together with a new brochure about the EANC and its activities.  The printing company who handled the printing and mailing, and which we have used in the past, has mista-kenly included a wrong, old letter in this mailing. The correct letter is below.  EANC is working with the printer to see how it intends to correct its error.  We try to keep our fundrai-sing appeals to a minimum, but it is more than ever the case that we need your help in supporting the many activities that the members of the Estonian-American community expect of us. The brochure that accompanied the letter in question is timely, and describes the many ways we support our community.  We hope that you have a chance to look at it, as well as the letter that we intended to send below, and find it in your hearts to help us in this important work. Thank you!

Setting the record for attendance in the 21st Century, 150 participants responding to the invitation to share their love of Estonia and Estonian culture attended KLENK's annual sõpruspäevad and conference in St. Petersburg, Florida's Magnuson Hotel Marina Cove Conference Center, January 6 and 7, 2012.  Cohosted by the Estonian Society of Central Florida (Kesk Florida Eesti Selts) and the Estonian National Association of South Florida (Lõu-na Florida Eestlaste Koondis) and held outside its traditional Midwestern location at a new time of year, old and new friends came together from 15 states (from Florida to Washington and New York to California), Canada and Estonia, and students from Augsburg and Geislingen reunited.

We again welcome in a new year.  Even though the traditions associated with its coming remain comfortingly fami-liar, with the start of each new year we can anticipate new initiatives, new challenges, and new achievements.  The Estonian American National Council wishes all of you a happy, productive, and prosperous year 2012! First of all, we want to thank all who have helped EANC during the past year, through your comments and suggestions, donations, and participation in our endeavors.  Your involvement is very important.  EANC anticipates a busy year, culminating in the celebration of its 60th anniversary in the second half of the year.  More information on this will be coming later.
